Today we visited Duikvaker, a dive show dubbed “the diving event of the year”. Earlier in the week an ad ran in the Spits! newspaper that invited readers to enter a drawing for free tickets. I entered, and won two tickets.

Tickets normally cost EUR 12 per person; a coupon available to everyone on the website offered a EUR 3 discount. Parking was EUR 4.

After picking up our tickets, we entered the convention hall and were assualted by representatives from several different companies pressing their brochures upon us. Then we spent some time walking among the 135 stands at the show.

The stands were arranged according to different categories: underwater video and photography; flora and fauna; tech-diving, dive schools; and others. Major dive equipment manufacturers were well represented with stands from Cressi-Sub, Dive Rite Europe, Scubapro, Suunto, among others. There was also a travel section, with stands from such diverse dive locations as Croatia, Tanzania, Sipadan, Bonaire, and Spain.

Since we’re not in the market for any dive gear, or thinking about our next dive vacation, we didn’t spend enough time at the show to write up an exhaustive report. We’re glad we won the free tickets, because it was a pleasant way to spend an afternoon, but we probably wouldn’t have gone if we had to pay the full entrance price. We were especially interested in the stand by Naturalis, the National Natural History Museum, which is located here in Leiden. Their stand provided some information about the wildlife in the North Sea.

The first Duikvaker show was in 1993.
