Leiden tourist info via cellphone

Tourists in Leiden will soon be able to use their cellphones as a city guide. Using the network of Wireless Leiden, visitors will be able to hear tourist tips while out on the town, in their own language. Information on restaurants, shops and cafes will also be available.
The electronic town guide is possible with a new generation of mobile phone which can receive information from wifi-radio waves. Leiden is the first city in the Netherlands to have a freely accessible wifi network. Already it available to be used to access the internet. The group Wireless Leiden, which has been instrumental in organizing the network, is now looking to more applications within the system.
The tourism-by-telephone system works like this. The phone can ‘see’ where the user is by connecting to the wifi network. The phone can then give the user information on tourist attractions in the area.
Unfortunately the system will not be in use during the major tourism boost for Leiden this year, Rembrandt’s 400 year anniversary. Most mobile phones on the market today are not capable of using the wifi technology. There is also still a lot of work to be done on the database of tourist information.

I hope that Asia also follows this good use of cellphones as a medium of information.
We all know pretty well that the capital of cellphone text is Asia, today. They use text messages almost all the time the whole day, i guess.
