Last Saturday we visited one of twenty national parks in the Netherlands, Veluwezoom. We used the NS Lentetoer to travel by train from Leiden to Rheden (Lentetour is a special spring train ticket that allows two persons unlimited travel around the country for €35 in first class).

Rheden train station is located very close to the park, and is just 15 minutes away from the visitor center. The brand-new visitor center was opened this year and features a very nice exhibit on the flora and fauna of Veluwezoom. There is also a shop and VVV where you can find tourist information for the area.

Nationaal Park Veluwezoom is an area of 5,000 hectares (12,355 acres). The southern part is made up of several private estates, and the rest consists of forest and heath. There are Red Deer, Wild Boar and Badgers. We didn’t see any of these, but we DID see a male Sand Lizard, which was very exciting! Check out this cool photo:

From the visitor’s center you can take several walks. We did the 5.5 km walk (see map) and had lunch at Posbank Restaurant, which was about half-way. As for birds, we saw very many Blackbirds, Chaffinches, and White and Yellow Wagtails. Our new species of the day was the Stonechat (Roodborsttapuit).
