Do you Twitter?

Twitter has been in the news a lot lately. From stranded mountaineers using Twitter to audience members tweeting from the floor during President Obama’s address to Congress, the media seems caught up in a Twitter frenzy. I first remember hearing about Twitter in the media when a student in Egypt tweeted his way out of jail. Twitter also came up during the Mumbai terrorist attacks and eye-witness photos from the Miracle on the Hudson flashed through Twitter like lightening.

I’ve been using Twitter for a couple of months now and I like it a lot, but if I’m not careful it’s a huge time vacuum. Sometimes my tweeps are passing on too much interesting information and I don’t get much work done. I’ve got multiple accounts that I use for different types of people I want to follow, and I’ve been able to make some great business contacts this way.

But the reason I wanted to write this post was to tell you about a benefit of using Twitter you may now know about – you can get free stuff. I picked up a free copy of TaxCut Premium in a Twitter giveaway from HRBlock. Arthur snagged a cool wildlife calendar when he followed The Wilderness Society. Birdorable has been known to give out magnets. And this week I scored a t-shirt by joining a campaign from Cooper’s Design.

So why don’t you give Twitter a try? You might not like it at first, but it will grow on you, I promise.
