Netflix is Great

We’ve been subscribed to Netflix since November last year and we still like it a lot. We have the cheapest plan, called “1 at-a-time”, which allows us to have one DVD at a time, but we are able to watch about two movies per week this way, which is a pretty good deal for $8.99 per month. And the best thing is that we don’t even have to leave the house for it. Each DVD we receive in the mail comes in its own return envelope, which we can put back in the mailbox so the next day the mailman will take it back. It’s pretty neat.

On Netflix’s website we have our own Queue in which we can add movies in the order that we want to get them, but new movies are sometimes not readily available. For instance, right now we have Slumdog Millionaire in our queue, but it says “Long wait” next to it because it is a popular movie. In that case we’ll get the next one in the queue until that movie becomes available.

Today we got an email from Netflix about a movie that is available, but not from a Netflix center near us. It’s another Indian movie called Malamaal Weekly, which we saw in an Indian theater in Jaipur. It was a fun experience and the whole audience was laughing out loud and singing along, but there were no subtitles so we didn’t understand much of what was going on. Netflix wrote today:

Malamaal Weekly was not available from your local shipping center. Fortunately, it was available from a shipping center in another part of the country. It’s on its way and should arrive within 3 to 5 days. You’ll notice we also recently sent the next available DVD from your Queue to enjoy while Malamaal Weekly makes its way to you.

How great is that? They’re sending our second movie as a bonus even though we have the “1 at-a-time” plan. That is some great costumer service!

Netflix also has an on-demand service where you can watch thousands of TV shows and movies instantly on your computer. I’ve installed a program named PlayOn on my computer that can stream services like Hulu and Netflix to our Playstation and then to the TV. This worked perfectly for a while, but the last few weeks it doesn’t work with Netflix anymore. I’ve been in contact with PlayOn’s helpdesk but I still can’t get Netflix to work through this.

Even though we’re not using the Watch Instantly anymore, I still think we are getting our money’s worth with the rental DVD’s. We’ve seen dozens of Netflix movies since we started. My favorite ones so far are: Planes, Trains and Automobiles with Steve Martin, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy with Will Ferrell and Tropic Thunder with Ben Stiller.

The most disappointing movies we’ve seen so far have been: Twilight, Wanted and Hancock.
