When shopping at a Real,- supermarket in Germany yesterday, I came across a display of Disney food products, by ‘Disney Magic’. There were many different items (pasta, juice, popcorn, etc.), but the most interesting one for me as a fan of Disney comics was “Dagobert’s 1. Taler”, or “Scrooge’s First Taler” (Taler is the fake currency used in German Disney comics). They are cookies in the shape of coins with a big one on them. Disney comics are very popular in Germany — today nearly one million fans in Germany read Micky Maus every week, and a recent study has shown that approximately one-fifth of parents also enjoy reading along.

A pack of 12 Taler cost € 0.99. That’s a pretty good exchange if you ask me.

The cookies are very tasty, by the way.

I just had a look at the Real,- website, and found there are quite a lot of Disney Magic food products, including Donald’s Fish Snacks, Disney Tomato Splash Ketchup, Grillmeister Donald Bratwursts and Beagle Boys Hot Dogs!! The name for this last product is Panzer Knacker, which is pretty funny because the Beagle Boys are named Panzerknacker in German (“steel breakers”), and in German a Knacker is also a type of sausage.

Disney has just launched its new Disney.com. It was supposed to go live in January, but it is here today. There is a lot of videos, TV shows, games and music to explore. The revamped website allows users to share content, create playlists and simultaneously play games and engage with friends within a virtual world of Disney characters. The site is very heavy on your bandwidth and requires Flash 9. Be aware that the site may not work immediately when you view it from outside the United States (for me it redirected to Disneyinternational.com at first, but after several tries I got through). So go check it out and have fun!

A new version of the official Disney.com website will be launched later this month. The broadband centerpiece, called Disney XD, will feature both free and premium Disney video and games. Users will be able to share videos, chat with friends in a social networking environment, listen to music, create playlists and play games.

Disney’s press release:

PRESS RELEASE — The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) is committed to working with consumer electronics as it builds on its tradition of using the newest technology to create high-quality content, Bob Iger, president and CEO of Disney said today in a keynote address to the 2007 Consumer Electronics Show.

“We are witnessing an explosion of media and Disney is both reaping the benefits of that explosion and acting as a catalyst by taking a technology-friendly approach,” said Iger, noting that the company was the first to offer movies and TV shows for download on iTunes last year.

“Our history of bringing our storytelling and our roster of characters to the frontiers of technology is unrivalled. Since the day Mickey dared to speak in a `talkie,’ Disney has boldly taken its content to the cutting edge. Wherever the path of unfolding technologies and imaginative new platforms may lead, Disney will be there. Year in and year out, we are proud to bring our creative content to your innovative products.”

Iger today unveiled the latest example of Disney’s use of technology by giving the CES audience a first look at the newly redesigned and enhanced Disney.com Web site, which will launch later this month.

Taking advantage of the strong growth of broadband and new Web tools, Disney.com is a compelling interactive experience that offers personalization and community-building amidst a broad array of Disney entertainment, products and services.

“No other media company has the breadth of quality family entertainment that can be brought together to create such an exciting online experience,” Iger said. “Disney.com is the digital doorway into Disney and both a destination and a portal into a vibrant, rich online entertainment experience for children, parents and people genuinely interested in Disney.”

Already a number-one ranked site among kids and families with 24.8 million unique monthly visitors (comScore MediaMetrix: November 2006), Disney.com is poised to continue its industry leadership when the new site launches.

Disney Xtreme Digital (Disney XD), the broadband centerpiece of the new site, will allow guests to personalize their favorite Disney content as well as watch and share with others videos, including television shows and shorts; chat with friends, listen to music; create playlists; and enjoy a stunning array of games. Disney.com guests will also be able to access premium content through Disney XD, such as the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean Online massively multiplayer game, which is set to launch in 2007.

Last week Disney released the new Walt Disney Treasures DVDs, tin-cased limited edition DVD collections featuring rare, classic cartoons and TV programs. One of this year’s four new volumes is More Silly Symphonies, featuring 38 of Disney’s vintage musical cartoons as well as their assorted spin-offs.

These spin-offs, of course, included a very famous print series: the monthly Disney feature in Good Housekeeping magazine. Appearing from 1934 to 1944, these one-page tales were retold in rhyme from their screen source material — then masterfully illustrated in watercolor by Tom Wood and Hank Porter. Long unavailable, the entire series got its first-ever reprint in Gemstone’s 2005 compendium Mickey and the Gang: Classic Stories in Verse.

And now they’re on DVD, too! Look closely, and you’ll find that Mickey and the Gang cover art and page spreads appear prominently among More Silly Symphonies’ still-frame galleries. You can sing along with Disney’s classic Symphony shorts — then enjoy a new look at these great Good Housekeeping promotional pages. They’re even better when you have the actual cartoons to compare them with.

Gemstone Archival Editor David Gerstein, author of Mickey and the Gang, is himself on board with More Silly Symphonies, offering audio commentary on select shorts. The DVD set, a true labor of love, also features commentary from noted Disney scholars like Jerry Beck, J. B. Kaufman, Ross Care, and Daniel Goldmark.

This week Disney announced that it will stop distributing its Disney Catalog that has filled the mailboxes of tens of millions of households for the last 10 years, and instead will focus on its online store. In addition Disney has abandoned eBay for their auctions and has started a new Disney Auctions website.

Stephanie Ayars at Disney Marketing said about the move away from eBay auctions that it will enable them do more brand cross-promotions, as well as cross-link to other appropriate places. Disney Auctions will be a 7-day format and will strive to offer truly unique items. Special items such as theme park artifacts, props and costumes will be offered close to the second week of each month.

About the cancellation of the Disney Catalog: “Customers almost dictated this to us,” said Paul Gainer, vice president of Disney Shopping, “once they go online we just don’t see them going back to the phone.”

Disney spent $18 million to mail 30 million catalogs last year, but printed catalogs were simply not ringing the registers as loudly as Disney’s online store. Half of the catalogs last year were sent in the holiday season, most of them to the similar people as the year before, but Disney had a 45% drop in phone orders. The number of customers who responded to e-mail and other online marketing messages, on the other hand, skyrocketed.

The $18 million saved by cutting the catalog will be used to buy search-engine advertisements, improve the company’s e-mail marketing campaigns and develop a more extensive roster of third-party sites, known in industry parlance as affiliates, to help refer buyers to Disney.com.
