Happy 70th birthday to Daisy

9 January 1937 saw the premiere of Don Donald, Donald Duck’s first headliner cartoon and introducing Donna Duck for the first time as Donald’s girlfriend. Donna Duck served as a precursor for Daisy in both animation and comics. On paper, she first appeared in a one-page illustration titled “Don Donald” and published in Good Housekeeping #3701 (January, 1937). (more…)

I wish everyone a magical 2007 full of Disney comics fun. 2006 had many anniversaries: the Money Bin’s 55th, Pluto’s 75th, Winnie the Pooh’s 80th, German Micky Maus Magazin’s 55th and Junior Woodchucks’ 55th. John Frost at The Disney Blog has a nice list of the 10 biggest Disney moments in 2006; it was the year that Disney bought Pixar, Pirates Of The Caribbean 2 had a record breaking opening day and Expedition Everest opened at Walt Disney World.

The Duckburg Money Bin, a monetary monument for 55 years

Money BinThere is no building on the Duckburg skyline as recognizable as Scrooge McDuck’s money bin, a twelve storey building first introduced in the Uncle Scrooge comic stories by Carl Barks in 1951. Behind dozens of booby traps and a strong safe door, the richest duck in the world (listed third on The Forbes Fictional 15 list this year) holds here a sea of money, a total of three cubic acres, in which the old miser likes to dive like a dolphin and burrow through like a gopher. Brazil celebrates 75 years of Pluto with special edition

Disney Aventuras, BrazilBrazil’s publisher of Disney comics, Editorial Abril, celebrates the 75th anniversary of Mickey’s dog Pluto with a special edition of Aventuras Disney. The magazine is dedicated to the character and contains “Pluto the Pup”, the first Pluto comic story from 1931 by Floyd Gottfredson. (more…)

Winnie the Pooh turns 80 today

The first book of Winnie the Pooh, by writer Alan Alexander Milne, came out in England on 14 October 1926, which makes the bear 80-years-old today. Winnie the Pooh soon became popular with children and adults alike, and when Walt Disney acquired the rights to the Pooh universe in 1961, the adventures of the chubby little bear were captured forever on film. Rembrandt’s Nightwatch in Duckburg

This year’s 400th anniversary of Rembrandt van Rijn is celebrated with exhibits and special events throughout Amsterdam, Leiden, and of course Duckburg! Last week’s issue of Dutch Donald Duck Weekly was centered around the Dutch painter, with its own version of one of Rembrandt’s most famous works, The Nightwatch. (more…)

Pixar exhibit in London

This Saturday the Science Museum in London sees the opening of Pixar: 20 years of animation, with hundreds of artworks, models and digital paintings from the Pixar studios, as well as two amazing audiovisual experiences unique to the exhibition, which will run from 1 April to 10 June 2006. (more…)

Lustiges Taschenbuch Enten-Edition #15It was in February 1951 that Carl Barks’ first story with Huey, Duey and Louie as Junior Woodchucks appeared in a story in Walt Disney’s Comics and Stories #125 titled Test at Frostbite Pass.
