May 2002 Lesbos, Greece From 17 to 24 May 2002 we stayed in Molyvos on the island of Lesbos in Greece. We did a day trip to Ayvelik in Turkey by boat and explored the island by car and scooter. [Back to index]	1/24 The airport of Mytilini. The bus right there brought us to our hotel. We are sitting by the water here waiting for the bus to leave.	2/24 This is our place in Hotel Akti near Molyvos. There are more rooms behind ours, but we were very nicely situated at the road with a beautiful view of the water and lots of sheep close by.
3/24 On our first day we walked to the town of Molyvos. There's many cats on Lesbos.	4/24 Molyvos is built against a hill. Here we in a castle on top of the hill looking down on the town with the harbor in the background.	5/24 A butterfly with Turkey in the background (we could see Turkey from our hotel).
6/24 Walking back to our hotel down from the castle on the other side of the hill. You can see our white hotel in the background and Turkey in the distance.	7/24 Across from Hotel Akti was the Aphrodite Hotel. We could use the bus service from that hotel to take us to the center of Molivos. That's what we're waiting for here.	8/24 Here we are taking an organized evening boat trip to a nearby harbor town.
9/24 We had rented a car for three days. The first day we took it to the far west of the island. Here we take an Indiana Jones route up a mountain to the top where there's a beautiful old monastery.	10/24 In the monestary from a bell looking down on the courtyard with a cat walking around.	11/24 Here we are visiting a petrified wood national park. It's the largest collection of petrified wood after the one in the United States.
12/24 Arthur standing in front of an ancient Roman aquaduct which they are renovating with lots of scaffolding around it.	13/24 This is our rented car.	14/24 This is a beautiful sunset view from our hotel.
15/24 On our visit to Mytilini we walked around the city. When we got lost we saw this setting, which could be postcard according to us.	16/24 Arthur standing in front of a road sign in Mytilini.	17/24 A huge cactus close to a Roman ampitheater we are visiting close to Mytilini.
18/24 Here we are in Petra, a touristy town very close to Molyvos. The red scooter sitting there is our rented one.	19/24 Petra means 'rock'. In the middle of Petra is a very odd tall rock with a church on top. That's where we are here. Around the corner in the distance is the town we were staying at: Molyvos.	20/24 Amy is looking down on Petra from the church on top of the rock. The people that built the church chiseled the stairs out of the rock.
21/24 We rented a scooter for a day from Moto George. We took it to Petra (see previous pictures) and to a hot spring close by the sea east of Molyvos.	22/24 Here we take a boat tour to Ayvelik in Turkey. This picture looks back on Lesbos and there are actually some dolphins in the picture. They were the only dolphins we saw for maybe only 30 seconds. You can hardly see them unfortunately.	23/24 Amy in the streets of Ayvelik with a mosque in the background.
24/24 There was a huuuUUuuge market in Ayvelik. Thousands of stands like this with stuff hanging all over the place.
