2003
The year 2003
In 2003 year we travelled down the Nile in Egypt from the pyramids of Giza to Abu Simbel in the south. We made a roadtrip to the coast of Normandy, and visited our friends in Oulu, Finland and stayed the weekend in Helsinki. We also had short trips to London, Paris, Dublin, Disneyland Paris, and spent Christmas in Deerfield, IL. Arthur went a week to Boston for work.

1/16 In January we went to London to see Gillian Anderson in a play. We spend four days in the city and also visited Westminster Abbey, the British Museum and London Tower. [more photos]

2/16 At the end of January we went to Dublin in Ireland for a long weekend. Here we saw Christchurch Cathedral, St. Patrick's Cathedral, Guinness Brewery, Tara Hill, Newgrange, Bewley's, Book of Kells at Trinity College, GPO and more.

3/16 In February Amy had to go to Paris for work and Arthur came to for two days after. We walked around a lot and went up the Notre Dame.

5/16 Arthur was in Boston for work from April 1st until April 6th and spent a few days exploring the city. He saw Fenway Park, Harvard, MIT, Museum of Science, lots of malls, Beacon Hill, Boston Common, Boston Tea Party Ship and more. [more photos]

6/16 From 18 April to 2 May 2003 we went to Egypt and visited Cairo, Aswan, Abu Simbel, Luxor and El Minya. We saw many ancient Egyptian temples, pyramids and tombs.

7/16 From 29/5 to 1/6 we went to Normandy in France. We saw Mont St. Michel, a German and US cemetery, Pirou castle, Omaha Beach, Pointe du Hoc, the Bayeaux tapestry, the Caen Memorial Museum for Peace and the beautiful coast at Etretat.

8/16 In June our friend David Gerstein came over from Denmark and we visited Frank Jonker with Daniel van Eijmeren, Harry Fluks and Roy Kooijman in Rijen in the south of the Netherlands.

9/16 On Whit Monday we took a long bike ride to Sassenheim where we saw Castle Teylingen and we biked on to Noordwijk aan Zee where it was packed with people on the beach because of the beautiful weather.

10/16 On 21 June we took a long bike ride to The Hague, Scheveningen and followed the coast through the dunes to Katwijk aan Zee. Here we are on Plein in The Hague. We saw a movie in Scheveningen en sat on the beach. The weather was beautiful.

11/16 On 22 June we visited Apenheul near Apeldoorn. It is a zoo where monkeys walk around loose. Especially these squirrel monkeys were not shy at all and were walking all over us.

12/16 On 23 August we visited the Breda Ballon Fiesta and made a one-hour tour on a hot air balloon. We also helped to set it up and take it down. We saw dozens of other balloons go up.

13/16 From 12 to 21 September we went to Finland. We visited our friends Marco and Regina in Oulu, took the train up north to Rovaniemi where we crossed the Artic Circle and south to Helsinki and made a day-trip to Tallinn in Estonia.

14/16 On 3 October there was a big festival in Leiden including this large Kermis.

15/16 We visited Disneyland Paris on 25 October, which had a lot of Halloween decorations, even more than last year!

16/16 From 10 to 27 December we visited Amy's parents, Ramon and Mary, in Deerfield for Christmas. For the first time we brought Arthur's parents Ben and Ineke and brother Patrick. [more photos]
