Edimpresa cancels classic Disney comics in Portugal
Posted on November 12th 2006 in Disney comics, EuropePortuguese publisher Edimpresa has announced the cancellation of all their monthly ‘classic character’ magazines like Pato Donald (“Donald Duck”) and Tio Pathinas (“Uncle Scrooge”), shifting focus to pre-school magazines (eg. Winnie the Pooh) and girls magazines (eg. W.i.t.c.h. and Fairies) only.
This bad news follows last month’s similar cancellation announcement of United States publisher Gemstone, who decided to cancel four of its six monthly titles due to increased paper prices and poor sales. The shift from classic Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse comics to more modern W.i.t.c.h. and Fairies-type magazines seems to be a worrying global trend, with more and more countries stopping the monthly Donald Duck or Mickey Mouse magazines in favor of series like W.i.t.c.h., Fairies and Winnie the Pooh, which seems to be the only titles doing extremely well everywhere.
There is a bit of good news from Portugal though, as Edimpresa also announced an upcoming reprint of Don Rosa’s classic The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck series in a special Tio Pathinas edition, and another upcoming title “Os Mágicos do Mickey”, which may possibly be the newly produced Italian series Wizards of Mickey.
