December 2005
Deerfield IL, USA
In December 2005 we went to Amy's parents in Deerfield for Christmas and New Year's. We went to Woodstock, Chicago, Berwyn and Illinois Beach State Park.
/17 After spending Christmas with Amy's parents we went to Chicago by train on Thursday 29 December.
/17 There was a big Christmas tree on Daley Plaza near the large Picasso statue of the baboon.
/17 It was very cold and there was a big group of pigeons sitting dangerously around the eternal flame on Daley Plaza.
/17 This was our first visit to Millennium Park and this is Cloud Gate on the SBC Plaza, a sculpture by British artist Anish Kapoor, also known as The Bean. It was very impressive.
/17 After a nice view of the city from Navy Pier in the very cold wind we took the free trolley back to Michigan Avenue.
/17 That morning it had been announced that one of Chicago's most famous restaurants, The Berghoff would close after more than 100 years of service, hence there was a long line of people waiting outside in the evening.
/17 Illinois Beach State Park stretches 6 1/2 miles along scenic Lake Michigan. It was established as a means to preserve the beach's shoreline and the unique ecosystem within this park.
/17 We did the 1.8 miles Dead River Trail which followed Dead River, which was frozen over.
/17 There was a Nature Center, but this was closed for the season.
/17 On Monday 2 January Aunt Sonia came over and we had a gourmet / raclette dinner.
/17 On Tuesday 3 January we drove to Berwyn where we saw this 40 foot spindle of eight cars at Cermak Plaza Mall.
/17 After Berwyn we drove to Eli's Cheesecake World for the 1pm Sneak Peek Tour of the famous Eli's Cheesecake factory. We had a 45-minute tour.
/17 After Eli's we went into Chicago where Amy picked up her visa for India from the Indian Embassy in the NBC building (this photo is inside the elevator of the tall building). We had dropped off her passport on 29 December.
/17 On 30 December we drove to Woodstock, to see the set of Groundhog Day (1993), featuring Bill Murray.
/17 Woodstock was a very nice cute town. We saw this sign in one of the shopping windows for a 'Best Dressed Window Award'.
