Who got a flu shot?

Last week I got a flu shot. For the first time it was offered to all employees at my company, at no charge. Okay, so the shot isn’t going to protect me from bird flu. There are still good reasons that young, healthy people should get the shot:

  • You want to stay healthy.
  • You want to keep your family healthy.
  • You don’t want to miss special social events.
  • You don’t want to spread the flu.
  • You can’t miss the time from work.

It’s no secret that there is a flu shot shortage in the U.S. In some places, it’s virtually impossible for people who are not considered to be “at risk” to get the shot.

Things work a bit differently here in the Netherlands. At risk patients, such as the elderly and those with a history of asthma, have already been receiving flu shots from general practitioners for years. A couple of weeks ago, Arthur asked our G.P. about us getting flu shots. The doctor’s assistant virtually laughed him out of the office. But some persistence paid off. Arthur is now the proud owner of a flu shot prescription. See, there’s a bit of a shortage here too. Hopefully the shot will be available at the pharmacy soon.
