Huge Leiden billboard destroyed by wind

The huge billboard at Leiden train station, that was erected in February, was destroyed by heavy wind yesterday. The billboard of 1100 square meters in size held an image of a huge bookshelf holding books with titles related to themes such as the celebration of Rembrandt’s 400th birthday this year.

Ironically, the controversionally expensive billboard of the large books was blown away during Boekenweek (‘Bookweek’), an annual event in the Netherlands for the promotion of literature. The large canvas was removed by the police yesterday after it was ripped off its frame. The €180,000 that the city spent to contruct the billboard was spent on an extra strong canvas and extra deep poles to withstand heavy wind. I hope they kept the receipt.
